What is Geography?
The world needs more humans who understand geography, because geography is critical to the solution of so many complex local, regional, and international problems. Georgia College, the state's official public liberal arts university, has as one of its four cornerstones Global Awareness and Diversity: a respect for human diversity and individuality and an understanding of the interdependence of the world's peoples upon one another.
The Georgia College Geography Program offers students a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in support of the National Council for Geographic Education's Geography for Life standards, which address:

Support of Geographic Education
The Georgia College Geography Program supports many other programs and schools on campus. For example, our course in Advanced Regional Geography is a staple for students in the College of Education pursuing a degree in Middle Grades Education.
In addition, the courses in Geographic Information are an integral part of the B.S. in Environmental Science. Many students from this program go on to graduate schools and careers in fields that require geographic skills.
Special Projects
Georgia College hosts the state's annual National Geographic Bee in late March or early April of every year. The bee selects the top 4th-8th grader from 100 middle schools to represent the state at the national competition each May in Washington, DC. For more information on the Bee, please contact the National Geographic Society.
Our faculty also support The Coverdell Institute, a GC organization devoted to the principles of civic engagement. The institute hosts the American Democracy Project and Active Citizenship. Geographers have played a crucial role in developing campus and community education programs for the institute.
B. A. in Geography at Georgia College
The world needs more humans who understand geography, because geography is critical to the solution of so many complex local, regional, and international problems. The bachelor's degree in geography is designed to provide each graduate with training in four essential skills: Graduates are required to complete at least one advanced course in each of these four areas. This foundation will prepare them for both careers in geography and graduate studies in a variety of advanced fields. In addition, each graduate will complete a Senior Capstone requirement, which can be tailored to the student's interests, and offers many possibilities for travel, research, and community involvement.

Teaching Geography
In order to sustain a degree program in geography, our department will need to hire one or two more faculty members. The following fields are most desirable to complement our existing strengths:
Community Service
An important part of our five-year plan is the growth of our service to both GCSU campus and the greater community. Already our classes have demonstrated a commitment to local service projects, and we expect this work to grow with the creation of a degree program. Faculty and students alike can contribute in a variety of ways.
Research
The GC Geography program has a commitment to promoting an aggressive research agenda. We are active in several professional and academic organizations and have a rich history of publication and grants. Our five-year plan calls for these specific projects to be developed further.
